Meghan Telpner is a Certified Nutritionist and Holistic Lifestyle consultant (www.meghantelpner.com), running a private nutrition practice in downtown Toronto. Her approach is to use food as medicine, providing the body what it needs nutritionally, while incorporating lifestyle modifications to help bring the whole person into balance in order to achieve optimal health. Meghan inspires her clients to take an active role in their own healing, where she acts as coach, providing the knowledge, support and encouragement, while her clients are full participating players working towards their health goals. Her clients take great pride in their sense of empowerment when they see and feel the positive results of their efforts.
Meghan’s personal experience overcoming illness has provided her with a thorough understanding of the connection between emotions and lifestyle and how these impact total health. Following a four-year struggle with digestive dis-ease, Meghan was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Trusting her instincts, she chose a completely holistic approach to reclaiming her health that included yoga, meditation, acupuncture, Chinese herbal remedies and nutritional modifications. Meghan is a firm believer and living proof that when both the mind and body are in balance, total health is the inevitable result.
Prior to attending The Institute of Holistic Nutrition (IHN), where she will graduate in December of 2007, Meghan earned an Honours Bachelor of Applied Arts and was awarded the University Gold Medal from Ryerson University. She then spent several years working in client services in the fast-paced, high-stress world of advertising. In addition to her formal education, Meghan has practiced yoga and will be attending teacher training with Bryan Kest, the creator of Power Yoga. She has also studied the practice of Vedic Meditation under the counsel of Thom Knoles, a Maharishi or true master of Vedic pundits. Most recently, Meghan has broadened her understanding of the mind’s power over the body with courses on Vipassana meditation and the Mindful Wellness Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program, a practice initially conceived for pain management and to help individuals overcome stress induced chronic illness.

Meagan,
While searching for your mother’s email address I came across your name. What a talented young woman you are! You take after your grandfather Gene Telpner.
My son Joe is getting married to a girl from Calgary. She is a nutritionist, and has written a book. She is very much into holistic medicine. You might want to check her web site.

Meghan, I heard from my brother (Chris-your ex employer) about your diagnosis with Chrohn’s and wanted to say that I wish you the very best and I am glad that you finally know what has been causing you all those problems- not that its any consolation. At least now you can target your positivity at the Chrohn’s..and set your goal for a healthier life…
All the best, Phil
Interesting read, timely. I’m 45 female, mother of 5 y.o. and 16 y.o. boys, work half time, dx’ed with UC in 1996, thus the long wait between children. Didn’t think I would ever have the energy to raise a second, but I have. Rollercoaster illness, sorry for your tardy dx, but what wonderful luck you have to be able to devote yourself fully to healing. I’ve had a recent run of good luck, healthwise, for the past six months, although it ran aground this last holiday season. Drats, I was hoping it was gone for good! Ah-hem. Have been taking lots of supplements recommended by Dr. Kenneth Yasny in addition to better foods. Abandoning the ‘low residue’ theory has helped. Yikes, what a nasty approach! I lived on white foods for years after diagnosis. Have also been taking lots of yoga at YogaWorks recently - so good.
So… my latest flare sent me researching, again, and I found you. Thanks much.
Hi Megan. I really enjoyed visiting your site. You captured our first day of school perfectly.
It’s great to see how you are already putting all the wonderful information we are learning about nutrition to good use, by sharing the knowledge with those who visit your site. Kuto’s to you!
PS You really do have a wonderful and cheerful smile. See you in class…
Cora
your strength is inspiring. keep spreading the positive sides
Hey Megan,
I am so glad I found your site. You are a very eloquent writer and I really appreciate you outlook on life…. Very inspiring.
I too was in fashion until my mom got diagnosed with a metastatic cancer. I became her go to gal for four years and in that time we realized that we had chosen to live life joyfully even in the most challenging of circumstances. I left fashion design shortly after my Mom got sick and realized that my life’s passion was really to assist people in living a pro-active life while dealing with chronic illness.
It is terrific learning about all of your amazing triumphs and I very much look forward to coming back and reading more!
Truly,
Shira

Hi Meghan:
It was nice meeting you the other Knight.
Good writing voice. And you are too young to be a Crohn…
Tom
I’m excited to find your blog and to follow your wellness journey. As someone who has just been diagnosed with a scary illness / disorder, I can say that I am eager to find ways that I can make myself as healthy as possible, in the face of uncertainty with my health. It is wonderful to find kindred spirits who are on the same path.
Namaste.

Meghan,
I love your approach to health, healing and life, and also that you appear to be a fellow Canadian (I grew up in Montreal, now living in Boston). I interviewed and wrote about a woman who successfully managed Crohn’s (after nearly dyling of it) with dietary changes, meditation, and autogenic training. She has been well for many years and recently gave birth to her fourth child! Her story is an inspiration. If you’d like to read about her, her story is in Own Your Health: choosing the best from alternative & conventional medicine” that I wrote with Brian Berman, MD. I believe that nutrition is the key to good health — keep up your good work!
My uncle has Crohn’s and he also chose the organic approach. He is now in his late 60s and has only had one disease-related operation in his entire life. I know two other men with this disease, both relying on western medication, both still having to undergo surgeries. Clearly, you found the best way to handle this. I look forward to reading your blog posts.

Speaking of Crohn’s, you might be interested in an article I wrote for the May 2008 issue of Prevention magazine about a woman who has been successfully managing her Crohn’s disease without medications for years. The issue is no longer on the newsstands, but the article is online here:
